About Assisted Living

We once stood in your shoes…preparing to travel the unfamiliar road you may soon be on. That was 30 years ago. Today, we guide people along that same path, caring for your family like our own.

What is it

You're not alone: our promise to you and your family.

Something changed. Maybe it was a fall. Maybe it was a visit where you realized, quietly, that things weren’t the way they used to be. Now you’re the one making calls, doing research, trying to understand a system nobody ever explained to you…while also being a son or a daughter, an employee, a spouse, a person with a life that doesn’t stop.

Some 30 years ago, the D’Aquila family in Meriden, Connecticut went through it, too. And because of what they found—and what they couldn't find—Assisted Living Home Care Services exists today. Three decades of stories just like yours.

why we exist

A family that's been where you are

Sharon D'Aquila grew up two houses from her grandfather. When Alzheimer's began to impact him, the family made sure he stayed home, walking him back every evening and watching over him the way families do when there's no one else.

When it became clear he needed more care than they could give, Sharon didn't know where to turn. She contacted the hospital. She made calls she didn't know how to make. She figured it out the way most families still do today: piece by piece, without a guide, hoping each decision was the right one. Plenty of anxiety, little confidence.

That's where Assisted Living Home Care Services began. Not in a business plan—as an idea in a dining room in Meriden. Soon, Sharon would be blessed with seven caregivers and armed with an undying conviction: if we needed help this badly, other families must too.

Looking back, Sharon firmly believes her grandfather lived longer because he stayed home. She knew it was the right call for her family. She also knew how hard it was to make it happen.

Sharon and her husband Ron officially launched the company in 1996. Family-owned. Family-operated. Family-oriented. Built specifically because they had been exactly where you are today.

What 30 years looks like

The belief hasn't changed

In the early years, when a caregiver couldn't make a shift, Sharon didn't call for a replacement. She went herself. Even if that meant putting the kids in the car and taking them with her. That wasn't a company policy. It was just who they were.

It still is.

Today, Assisted Living Home Care Services has grown from seven caregivers to more than 750, serving families across Connecticut and Massachusetts. Some of them have been with us for more than 20 years. Our family has outgrown the dining room table to today occupying three offices and employing nearly 50 office staff.

But the behavior and convictions that started it hasn't changed: when a family needs someone, someone from our extended ALS family shows up.

The caregivers who work for ALS are not interchangeable. They're matched to clients with intention: personality, habits, history, what matters to the person in their care.

Our caregivers are among the most recognized in the state—not for attendance or compliance, but because families write about them. Families mention them in obituaries. They send heartfelt, hand-written notes to us, saying things like: She didn't just care for my mother, she became part of our family.

That happens because of who these caregivers are, and because ALS has spent three decades building a culture that recognizes the difference between simply showing up and meaningfully making a difference.

Thirty years in, the belief hasn’t changed. Families navigating this decision deserve someone who has already walked the road and has a three-decade track record of paying it forward.

a long history of going above and beyond

Thirty years is a long story. And it's just getting started.

From a dining room in Meriden to three offices across two states: the full history of how this company was built, who built it, and what has stayed the same across every chapter is a story worth telling. We hope you will enjoy reading it as much as we have living it.
