Adult Family Living

The Adult Family Living program, administered under Connecticut's Home Care Program for the Elderly, starts with one requirement most people don't expect: the caregiver has to already live full-time in the same home as the senior they're caring for, with proof of residency. Living nearby, even next door, doesn't meet the guidelines.

One relationship is specifically excluded. Spouses aren't eligible to serve as the paid caregiver under this program. Adult children, other family members, and non-relative live-in caregivers can qualify if they meet the residency requirement and the state's other criteria.

Beyond residency, eligibility also depends on whether the senior has Medicaid, has genuine care needs, and is living at home. Someone currently in a facility isn't disqualified either, since coming home to be cared for is itself a valid path in.

Caring for a loved one full-time wears on a person, even with support already in place. Taking real time away, an afternoon, a full day, whatever the moment calls for, is often what makes it possible to keep showing up for the long run.

Respite care covers exactly that: one of our caregivers steps in for a few hours, a day, or longer, so you can handle your own appointments, work, or simply rest. It can be scheduled ahead of time or arranged on short notice when something comes up.

The same coverage applies from our side, too. If your regular caregiver is sick, on vacation, or otherwise unavailable, we don't leave a gap. Backup caregivers are ready to step in, and there's an on-call line for nights and weekends, so care continues on schedule either way.
